Indian Passport Photo — Size, Dimensions & Requirements
Passport photos are the strictest photos most people ever take — and the Passport Seva process checks them both digitally (online upload) and physically (printed copies at the PSK). The standard Indian passport photo is 35mm × 45mm with a plain white background. This page validates your digital file against the upload requirements.
How to check your passport photo
- Upload the photo you plan to use for the Passport Seva application.
- The validator checks format, file size and dimensions against the preset above.
- Fix any failures with the linked tools and re-check.
Rules that actually matter for Indian passport photos
- Plain white background — not cream, not grey, not a wall with texture. The background remover on this site can set pure white in one click.
- Neutral expression, mouth closed, both ears visible where possible, eyes open and looking straight at the camera.
- No glasses is the safest choice (glare and tinted lenses cause rejections), no caps or headbands. Religious head coverings are allowed but the face must be fully visible from chin to forehead.
- Face should occupy roughly 70–80% of the photo height. The passport-photo-maker tool on this site has this crop guide built in.
- For infants: eyes open, no toys or parent's hands visible in the frame — yes, they really check.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Indian passport photo size?
35mm × 45mm in print, with a plain white background. For the online upload, the file-format/KB/pixel rules are shown in the preset above.
Can I take a passport photo at home?
Yes — daylight from a window, plain wall, phone camera at eye level a metre away. Then use the passport-photo-maker here to crop to 35×45mm and set a white background, and validate the result on this page.
Do I need printed photos at the Passport Seva Kendra?
For most applicants the photo is also captured live at the PSK counter, but carrying a couple of correct printed copies (and the same digital file) avoids surprises, especially for minor applicants and some categories.
Can I smile in a passport photo?
Keep it neutral — a slight natural expression is fine, teeth showing is not. Neutral expressions are required for biometric face-matching.
Is my photo uploaded when I check it here?
No — the check runs locally in your browser.
